Our school, nestling in the heart of the Clun Valley, and surrounded by the beautiful South Shropshire countryside, offers a dynamic, challenging and nurturing environment for our children.
We are fortunate enough to be a four class school which enables children to be taught within a two-year age range. Our school currently has approximately 100 children on roll; small enough to ensure each child is valued as an individual, but large enough to have a football team! We have excellent facilities for three to five year olds in our Foundation Stage Unit and have recently opened our eco block, comprising a beautifully designed classroom and the best school toilets in Britain (or so we think!) We are a European Green Flag Eco School and ‘Forest School’ is well-established and integrated into our school life.
As a school committed to the Arts, our children have access to a wide range of arts activities throughout the year, reflecting the unique creative culture of the Clun valley. Many of our children enjoy music lessons from skilled peripatetic teachers; we currently offer tuition in saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar, ukulele, drums and pop band. We work in partnership with Arts Alive as a promoter and the children benefit from many excellent visiting theatre company performances and workshops, and our boys were recently commended for their work with the Olympiad Dance for Boys project. Our children get many opportunities to work with professional visual artists.
At St. George’s we all believe that learning a Modern Foreign Language will be hugely beneficial to our children. We are currently piloting a new and innovative French Curriculum which starts rigorously teaching French in the Foundation Stage.
We have recently forged links with Oxford University; Dr David Harris, Tutorial Fellow in Biochemistry, St. Anne’s College, visited to run an exciting DNA practical experiment for Year 5 and 6 pupils.
St George’s School offers extensive and varied after-school provision with well attended clubs such as gardening, dance, football, young engineers, art and many more. We have an industrious and committed PTA who fund many exciting opportunities for the children.
St. George’s is part of the dynamic South West Shropshire Learning Trust, a family of local schools, including Bishop’s Castle Community College, working strategically together with partner organisations on behalf of the community towards a shared vision of outstanding educational provision for all. If you would like to visit the school I would be delighted to show you around.
All stakeholders of the school including governors, staff, parents and pupils have helped in developing our Vision Statement.
West Mercia Police and Shropshire Council support our school with the Safer School initiative. We are an accredited ‘Safer School’ and proud of our Safer School sign and certificate. The accreditation is reviewed every two years.
The initiative is a holistic, practical and realistic approach to school security and personal safety. It gives our school a clear focus on the subject and turns a negative subject into a positive one. It sets a minimum standard for school security.
